Since Netflix started streaming video, cable and satellite operators have been steadily losing customers to a younger generation of users who don't see cable or satellite as a viable alternative.

By making programming available anytime and anywhere, there really is no point in paying for many of the channels that come bundled with the different tiers of entertainment packages.

As one of the oldest movie channels on cable, HBO has been keeping itself relevant by introducing groundbreaking programming and making it available everywhere. The latest platform in which consumers can access HBO programming is on the PlayStation 3.

Owners can now view HBO Go programming using their gaming console by streaming the content for free if they have an HBO subscription.

The HBO Go service allows subscribers to watch their favorite HBO shows, movies, comedy, special, sports, documentaries as well as any other programming on mobile devices and gaming consoles. Users can create their own personal watch list from many of the classic HBO shows such as The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire and others.

Although the PlayStation 3 is the previous generation of the gaming console, more than 80 million people have purchased the console around the world since it first went on sale in 2006. According to Sony more than 150 million PlayStation Network online accounts have been established for the PS3, the PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita, and it has more than 222,000 entertainment items for sale.

The new PlayStation 4 thus far has sold 6 million units, and Sony said it is working on introducing HBO Go on the new console as soon as possible.

The gaming industry is trying to make their consoles an all-in-one device that allows users to play games, surf the web, shop, watch Blu-ray movies, stream content such as Netflix and chat with their friends around the world by replacing everything else under the television.

Although gaming consoles are replacing different components, many believe its days are also numbered. New cloud gaming solutions are making it possible for users to do all of the above without a propriety hardware connected to the television. Only time will tell what the living room landscape will look like in the not to distant future.
