Amazon Offers New Bonuses For Device Owners With New Incentives

It's not hard to imagine that a lot of people out there are enjoying some new devices with the recently concluded holiday. New tablets, smartphones and plenty of others likely waited under Christmas trees all over the planet, and the United States was likely no different. But Amazon has recently announced a set of Christmas week deals waiting to help those new tablet and smartphone owners augment the experience with discounts on some big name apps, and some discounts in general.

Those customers who download an app or a game on the Amazon Appstore to an Android (News - Alert) phone or tablet, from December 24 through December 28, will get a $5 credit toward the purchase of future games, apps, or related in-app/in-game purchases. That may seem like comparatively small potatoes, but $5 can go quite a long way in terms of apps, especially when Amazon is offering up some big deals on app purchases to begin with.

For instance, the produce of several game studios, including Electronic Arts, Gameloft and Sega of America—which in turn represents titles like “Bejeweled 2” and “Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing”--will see price drops of up to 65 percent. December 26 will see a one-day sale on Office Suite Pro 7, dropped down to $0.99 from its original price of $14.99. Some apps will even be available for free, including “Quell Memento” and “Doodle Farm;” users will need to check the appstore daily to see just what's on hand.

The vice president of Amazon Appstore and games, Mike George, offered some commentary on the sales in his remarks, saying “Customers look to Amazon to provide the best deals in the industry throughout the holiday season and the Amazon Appstore is no exception. The combination of a $5 credit to use in the Amazon Appstore and the expansive deals we are offering for Christmas week will help customers add exciting apps and games to their devices this holiday season.”

Indeed, that's likely to be a help. One of the biggest points involved in the original creation of the Kindle Fire tablet line—at least by some estimations—was the accompanying access to the Amazon ecosystem of apps, including e-books. To see Amazon putting the apps front and center just in time for a time when more people are likely to be getting hands on new devices is likely a great expression of “strike while the iron is hot.” Meanwhile, this isn't a particularly original idea for Amazon; Microsoft (News - Alert) has been running “countdown to the New Year” sales on Xbox Live Arcade for the last several days--some really impressive deals have been had in there as well—and Steam has been running its holiday sale for the last several days with a panoply of deals throughout.

For Amazon to offer up its own holiday special isn't exactly unheard of, but it's likely to prove a welcome deal nonetheless that comes at a pretty good time. It might have been better had Amazon delayed starting until December 26 as opposed to kicking it all off on December 24, but there are still plenty of fine deals to be had in the interim, a welcome development for any Android user.
