The Windows 8.1 Preview gives a peek at the forthcoming Internet Explorer 11 – just as Microsoft (News - Alert) has said that Internet Explorer 11 will support SPDY, a Google-backed offering which increases the speed for downloading.

TechCrunch said the announcement “is actually a major step for SPDY, which is now supported in all of the mainstream browsers.” In addition, more developers will soon support SPDY on servers given the widespread use the offering.

Also, Microsoft announced that it will support WebGL in Internet Explorer 11. WebGL be available on all devices running Internet Explorer 11. Hardware acceleration is built in Internet Explorer 11, TechCrunch adds.

“With WebGL and SPDY, Microsoft is clearly getting behind a number of open standards,” TechCrunch reports.

But WebRTC, which could revolutionize communications, is not included. Chrome and Firefox already use it.

Microsoft has a proprietary version of the standard.. Windows 8.1 also has new developer tools, network prioritization, and battery improvements, ZDNet said.

It includes the UI Responsiveness tool, which can profile and analyze performance of web pages, the report said. Also, auto-completion was added to Console and DOM Explorer. In addition, an emulation tool will show how pages appear in different resolutions and document modes, the report adds. Other additions include an updated memory tool.

Windows 8.1 Preview is now available for download. A free update to Windows 8, the official version won’t be offered until later this year – perhaps in time for the winter holidays. A prerelease version is now available for developers and anyone else who wants it.

The preview version of Windows 8.1 was released Wednesday at the start of the Build conference for Microsoft partners and developers, according to TMCnet.

The changes clean up some of the problems found with Windows 8, which was released Oct. 26, but still keep many of its benefits.
