Google (News - Alert) has been making quite a few deals lately. Its latest acquisition is a cloud services provider and backend as a service company based in San Francisco called Firebase. The company makes a number of products for software developers building mobile or web applications. This follows the path that Google has been on to expand and increase its share of the growing worldwide public cloud services market. I believe that Google plans to demonstrate new Firebase features at its coming event, Google Cloud Platform Live, on November 4.

It appears that this is the time of messaging platforms. Google and Facebook (News - Alert) have both made some acquisitions in this area and the trend continues. The latest company to be involved is Nimbuzz. This is a company based in the Netherlands, but has its greatest user base in India. New Call, a U.K.-based provider of low-cost fixed line and broadband services will acquire a percentage of Nimbuzz (News - Alert).

MegaChips Corp, a Tokyo-based fabless semiconductor maker, is set to acquire venture capital backed SiTime Corporation, a U.S. semiconductor company. This is a transaction that will combine two complementary fabless semiconductor leaders, but more than that, they will provide solutions for various markets such as the growing wearables, mobile and Internet of Things markets.

Nokia (News - Alert) Growth Partners (NGP) is a global venture capital firm sponsored by Nokia. NGP invests independently and focuses investments on growth stage mobile technology companies. This week NGP announced a new investment in a travel company called Hipmunk. This company is a metasearch travel service providing mobile and online solutions that makes travel planning fast and easy. Metasearch engines take input from a user and simultaneously send out queries to third party search engines for results.

BigPanda is designed to help IT and development and operations teams resolve issues faster with lower cost to their organizations. In addition to scoring big in a Series A funding round, the company announced this week that it has launched a new platform that applies data science techniques to the analysis and automation of IT incident management. Since it seems that keeping track of the increasing number of incidents is becoming a difficult task, BigPanda could help relieve some of the burden.
