Facebook Reports Big Q3 Revenue Jump

It appears that a number of moves Facebook (News - Alert) has made in order to increase revenue are starting to pay off in a big way.  The company just announced the third quarter revenue numbers and it seems like it’s almost all good news for the social media giant. In total, Facebook says it brought in more than $3 billion in the third quarter of 2014. This is a massive 59 percent increase when compared to the same quarter in 2013.

While there has been some revenue generated from suing spammers for doing what they do best, advertising has also seen a significant improvement. The social media site says it brought in more than $2.96 billion in the last quarter. This advertising revenue increase is a 64 percent increase from the same period in 2013.

While advertising in general saw a significant jump, it was mobile advertising that really drove the improvement. In total, mobile advertising revenue made up 66 percent of the total revenue. Mobile advertising money increased by almost 50 percent over the previous year.

While revenue numbers are good news for the social media site, not everything was rosy. Costs and expenses for Facebook also saw a significant increase in the third quarter of 2014 compared with the same period last year.  Total expenses and costs totaled a little more than $1.81 billion, which is an increase of 41 percent over the same quarter from 2013.

Facebook has been changing the way everyone makes money off the site. The social media site changed the way developers are able to incentivize their apps in August. How these changes have affected the site’s own earnings obviously isn’t clear yet considering the change was made late in the last quarter. It is possible there will be more data about this kind of change once the Q4 report comes out in a few months.
