Social Media has taken society by storm. People and businesses use this medium for a variety of purposes—some to keep in touch with distant friends, others to promote a product or event, to name a few. Twitter (News - Alert) is firmly entrenched as a major player in the social media space, with millions of users and a truly global reach.

This week, the social media giant announced its second attempt to incorporate music into its platform, Audio Cards.  Twitter Audio Cards are the result of a new partnership with iTunes and SoundCloud. The lost of audio Card partners is long and distinguished and growing, of whom the first band to give this new function a whirl was the Foo Fighters.

Twitter said in a blog post: "The world’s most influential musicians and media producers already share unique audio content through Twitter every day.

Audio Cards offer Twitter users a way to listen to music directly from their timeline through either iTunes or Sound Cloud. The Audio Cards can include music, podcasts or any other audio content.

In recent blog post, Twitter cited, “With a single tap, the Twitter Audio Card lets you discover and listen to audio directly in your timeline on both iOS and Android (News - Alert) devices.”

The app is user-friendly, and allows one to listen to their selection while still being able to explore Twitter.

Twitter’s previous attempt at incorporating music took place in April 2013, with recommendations for users, but the app bombed and a year later was shut down.

This new release could be in direct correlation with investors’ concerns. With the slowdown in engagement and user growth the company’s shares are down 24 percent this year. "In broadening out the content, they hope people will stay in the Twitter environment" Jack Kent, senior mobile analyst at HIS, told CNBC. Only time will tell how successful this new effort in audio will be, but it is abundantly clear that social media users are always looking for more from their social media experience.
