Taliban Spokesman Accidentally Reveals Location on Twitter

It pays to be careful about sharing your location on social media, especially if you’re a member of the Taliban. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid accidentally revealed his apparently true location on Twitter (News - Alert) using its geolocation settings, according to a Washington Post blog.

Mujahid, who has over 6,000 followers on Twitter, posted a tweet where he claimed to be in Afghanistan, but the geolocation tag (News - Alert) revealed him to be in Sindh, a region in Pakistan.

Although Mujahid’s tweet was in Arabic, a number of users noticed the discrepancy and pointed it out in English.

“You moved to Sindh from Quetta?” one user identifying himself as Salarzai and with the Twitter username of “@Afghan_rebel” said.

“@Afghan_Rebel @zabihmujahid, maybe Quetta is no longer safe or @zabihmujahid love to spend sometime in Karachi beach,” another user by the name of Sangar Rahimi said.

Mujahid denied that he was actually in Pakistan, saying that the label was actually an “enemy plot.”

This story might appear to belong more in The Onion than in the Washington Post, but it shows an important lesson. Although most people are not part of terrorist organizations, they should still pay attention to their privacy settings, especially those that affect how much they give away about their locations.

That’s why Twitter itself turns off location sharing by default. The company also urges users to pay attention to their privacy settings in its FAQ pages.

Terrorist groups have shown a surprising embrace of Western social media services. In addition to Twitter, Mujahid also communicates over Viber, WhatsApp and Wechat. Islamic State has also used social media to recruit people in the West.

As Washington Post blogger Rick Noack put it, Mujahid “may hate the U.S., but he apparently loves American technology.”

Mujahid and other terrorist group members will continue using social media, but they’ll probably pay better attention to their privacy settings in the future.
