Supervalu and Albertson's Admit Malware Data Breach

Yet another credit card system hack has left customers of Supervalu and Albertson’s wondering if any of these kinds of systems are safe enough to trust. The two supermarket companies announced their systems had been the victims of attacks on Monday. The companies said their systems were infected by malware in late August or early September, and while they don’t know what access exactly the hackers were able to gain, account numbers, card expiration dates and names of cardholders could have been stolen.

This hack is just the latest in what is becoming an ever-increasing problem. The most famous of these attacks happened a few months back when the Target (News - Alert) retail chain was hit with a massive data breach. Since the company came clean about that hacking, there have been a number of other bigger retailers admitting they too have some serious security flaws in their software.

A report in June laid out just how dangerous and damaging these attacks actually are, saying the hackers are costing companies a combined $445 billion per year. Supervalu is trying to tamp down some of the upcoming panic by saying it feels the attack was limited to certain checkout lanes at four different locations in Minnesota. The situation at Albertson’s is a bit more dangerous as the company said, it could affect locations in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming; Acme Markets stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In total, the Boise-based firm has more than 1,081 stores across the country.

If the reaction from the public in previous cases is any indication, Albertson’s and Supervalu could be in for a rough ride in the coming months. While retailers like Target and Home Depot have weathered the storm, the continued instances of data breaches doesn’t bode well for companies down the road.
