Does the iPhone 6 Really Bend?

It seems that there will always be rumors associated with Apple (News - Alert). On September 9, 2014, Apple introduced the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Over the past couple of weeks, we have begun to hear rumors that the new design of these phones are so thin that with little or no effort at all, the devices will bend to the point that it affects the use of the phone.

We have also seen several YouTube videos showing people easily bending the iPhone (News - Alert) 6 backwards. It should be noted that in all the videos which I watched, while I did see the metal casing of the phone bend, I did not see any damage to the glass screen. So the question to ask is if this is really true or is someone perpetrating a hoax?

Our very own Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) took it upon himself to venture out to the Apple Store in Stamford, Conn. and attempt the feat of bending an iPhone 6. Guess what? For some strange reason he was not able to do it. As you can see from the video and his fingers, Rich was trying to bend the phone from various angles and was not able to do so.

There are other videos, such as USA Today’s Jefferson Graham who also was unable to bend it. In fact, he passed the phone around to several people who walked by and none of them were able to do so. One person commented that there was some flexibility to the device, but not enough that it would bend. It is a thin device, so some flexibility should be expected.

I love how everything that is perceived as a problem has the word “gate” added to it. So now we have ‘Bendgate’ So I asked the question as to whether or not you can really bend an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, the conclusion by several, everyday people who actually attempted to do so found that they were unable to do so. I will now ask another question, if you put the device in your back pocket is there any likelihood that it will bend?

I believe that the answer to that question is resounding yes. In fact, put any cell phone in your back pocket, sit down and tell me what happens. Except for the videos that show someone using a lot of strength to bend the phone, most of the complaints have been that the new iPhone was in their pocket and it bent. Another question that I have is why would you put a device that is potentially breakable in your back pocket and not expect anything to happen to it.

So far, everything that I have seen, including Rich’s attempt, show that in all probability the fact that an iPhone 6 can be bent by simply leaning or bumping into another person is nothing more than a hoax.

I feel that I am a person of some common sense, as such; I feel that if you are going to spend $300 on a smartphone, you should probably take a little consideration into how putting such a thing in your back pocket could affect it.
