Wheelings & Dealings: Shippo Receives $2M in Funding, Forms Partnership with GoDaddy

For logistics and shipping needs, the vast majority of people turn to the names that are most familiar: FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPS (News - Alert) and other companies that provide local services. While most consumers and businesses are content with the services these organizations provide, Shippo—founded in 2013 by Laura Behrens Wu and Simon Kreuz—was created based on the belief that a better alternative to simplify the shipping process for small businesses could be designed. With a potential customer base of 28 million small businesses in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the solutions Shippo provides has great potential, which explains the $2 million round of funding the company received.


The round of funding was led by SofTech (News - Alert), with additional participation from Version One Ventures, FundersClub, Dave Morin’s Slow Ventures, 500 Startups, East Ventures, Digital Business Factory, Joanne Wilson, Fabrice Grinda, Karl Jacob, and Fadu Ghandour.

So what does Shippo offer the small business owner that he or she can't get from FedEx or any other service provider? The answer is convenience and integration with the SMB’s storefront dashboard as well as a large number of shipping providers so the user can choose the best deal any time they need to ship a package. Because of all these partnership the actual cost of shipping can be up to 80 percent lower than the retail price, this according to a statement co-founder Laura Behrens Wu told VentureBeat in an interview.

Shippo only charges $0.05 per label, plus the actual cost of shipping, which considerably less than the retail price. There are no additional monthly, hidden or set up fees and companies that process more than 500 shipments can get volume discounts.

The announcement of the new round of funding also included a new partnership with GoDaddy so it can start providing its shipping service to all small business customers on GoDaddy. This partnership presents a great opportunity for Shippo as millions of online businesses use GoDaddy to host their websites. By providing an easy integration of the shipping platform, Shippo will access a large pool of customers across the country.
