PlayStation TV Arriving with Huge Library in Tow

PlayStation TV has sparked the imaginations of a variety of users; the thought that a library of games could be on hand, readily accessed, from one central point is the kind of thing that's captivated gamer interest pretty much since there was an Internet. Now, PlayStation TV is about to launch, and reports have arrived that the gamers will have plenty to do when it does hit, as PlayStation TV will launch with access to a massive library.

Sony Computer Entertainment America's vice president of platforms marketing, John Koller, brought out the word about as officially as possible that, when PlayStation TV launches October 14, it will bring with it a huge array of games, measuring nearly 700 titles strong at launch. Included in the batch will be not only some of the biggest in recent hits like “Killzone: Mercenary,” but also some of the games with more of a cult following like “Persona 4 Golden.” Not surprisingly, Sony will also be calling on its extensive past library of titles like “Metal Gear Solid.” Plus, more titles will be available as time goes on; slated for a November addition is “Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom” and for a less tangible point in the future, “Minecraft” will also make an appearance, proving that Microsoft (News - Alert)'s purchase indeed won't turn the game into an exclusive property. Content will also be made available from the PlayStation Vita line of mobile games, and PlayStation 4 owners will get the ability to use Remote Play to stream a game from the PS4 to another television using a wired Internet connection, a great development for families where the main television may be in use when someone else wants to game.

Those interested in getting in on the fun will have three options for so doing: there will be a standalone version for $99.99, a bundle that contains a wireless controller, an eight gigabyte memory card, and “The LEGO Movie Videogame” based, as the title suggests, on the film of approximately the same name for $139.99. The third option is available at Walmart locations, offering everything from the PSTV bundle as well as a copy of “Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time” available at the bundle price of $139.99.

This is another great development for Sony, who is literally hitting on all cylinders lately. While there's some concern about the ability to outright purchase some of the older games as opposed to renting, it seems as though Sony's bringing out everything it can in the best fashion it can. There were reports earlier to suggest that Sony's about 85 percent finished with the Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) system, and it's quite clear that PlayStation 4 is leading the pack in terms of the console market's sales so far. Sony has quite a few edges in the market this time around, and that's going to put a lot of pressure on Microsoft and its Xbox One, in a nearly-permanent state of catching up since that disastrous E3 conference in 2013.

Only time will tell, of course, just how far Sony can go with PlayStation TV, but it's a pretty safe bet that it will get plenty of the retro enthusiasts interested, and if it can bring out a subscription model for the older material, it's certainly going to keep quite a few interested players on hand.
