dtSearch, a software company founded in 1991 that specializes in text retrieval software offers solutions for enterprise desktop search, Intranet and Internet spidering and search, as well as search engines for developers (SDK) to integrate into other software applications.

A Web crawler is an Internet bot that systematically browses the Web typically for the purpose of Web indexing and is also referred to as a Web spider.

Web search engines and some other sites use spidering software to update their Web content or indexes of others sites' Web content. Web crawlers can copy all the pages they visit for later processing by a search engine that indexes the downloaded pages so that users can search them much more quickly.

dtSearch is a company that does this so well that it is considered to be the smart choice for text retrieval since it was founded.

The company’s text retrieval product line is designed so that it can instantly search terabytes of text over a vast expanse of both online and offline data types. Due to the way that dtSearch’s products are created, they are not only able to search file directories, but they can also search through emails, nested attachments, along with online dynamic or static data and various other databases such as BLOB data. This is a collection of binary data stored as a single entity in a database management system.

Currently there are dtSearch engines for Linux (native 64-bit/32-bit C++ and Java APIs) and Win & .NET (News - Alert) (native 64-bit/32-bit C++, Java and .NET APIs). Today’s announcement from dtSearch is that we will also be seeing an Android beta search engine.

dtSearch engines can extract content from the Internet, databases such as Access, XBASE and XML, along with various MS Office formats. Additionally, dtSearch can gather information from PDF files and support covers recursively embedded objects and images in supported email types.

What makes these search engines such wide ranging products is the fact that dtSearch offers over 25 hit-highlighted search options, some of which include special forensics search features.

In addition, dtSearch products also include Unicode support that covers international languages. These options allow for the handling of Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean. These languages need to be read right to left which dtSearch does support.

Several years ago dtSearch’s product line was described as an industrial strength search engine. It is so powerful that law enforcement uses dtSearch products directly to comb through large volumes of data.  If that is not enough, many third-party forensics, security and e-discovery applications also embed dtSearch’s central development product, the dtSearch Engine, for instant searching and data support. We can now add Android (News - Alert) support to dtSearch’s capabilities.
