Kobo Launching Waterproof E-Reader

When it comes to the e-reader market, the big two are the Amazon Kindle and the Nook. Beyond those two e-readers, there isn’t a lot of room for new companies to break in. It seems to be the only way e-readers are able to make a dent is if they actually put out their own e-reader under the umbrella of Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Having said that, one company is trying to stay alive in the market by offering up features the bigwigs can’t.

Perhaps one feature that could keep Kobo in action would be the ability to actually read one’s e-reader while they are relaxing in the bath. That is the feature the Kobo Aura H20 brings. This particular device is being marketed by the Canadian Kobo as the world’s first premium waterproof E ink e-reader. This means that if it truly is water proof it means this is the first e-reader that can literally be read wherever someone wants.

Michael Tambyn, the Kobo president talked about this new e-reader to the Guardian and said that when his company asked customers one factor that most held them back from reading e-readers, those customers responded that, “they love to read in the bath, by the pool, or on the beach, but believed that devices and water didn't mix."

This new e-reader will indeed make it possible that water and e-reader devices do mix. The Kobo Aura H20 will be launching in October, just in time for people to buy one while they are doing their Holiday shopping. It makes sense to launch this kind of a device now, right as the reading public seem to be making the biggest push yet to get away from bound books. Indeed, one survey by Nielsen showed that more than half (51 percent) of book buyers in the first quarter of 2014 owned an e-reader.

While we do know the Kobo Aura H20 will launch in October, the one thing we don’t yet know is just how much the company will ask for the gadget. If it can offer up a reasonable price, this could be one that keeps the company alive and kicking.
