Wheelings & Dealings: M&A Week in Review

It is difficult to believe that in the U.S. the Limited English Proficiency population has grown by over 80 percent since 1990. There are two areas that have been affected quite a bit because of this. There are not enough translators in either the court system or the healthcare field. That is why Stratus Video Interpreting is acquiring a company called Capiche. Combined, these two companies should make sure that regardless of the language that a person speaks they will get proper healthcare and legal representation.

Yahoo is once again on the move. Over the past several years, Yahoo has acquired video sharing, advertising, photo management, image recognition and cross platform video streaming companies. The latest acquisition is a company called Zofari. This is a company that uses a variety of different means to match users with places that they may want to go to where they current are.

Amazon is another company that has acquired a few companies over the past couple of years, it has also formed merchant partnerships with various companies including the U.S. Postal Service. This week, the word is that Amazon is funding a company called Acquia. This is a commercial open-source software company providing products, services, and technical support for Drupal, which is a free and open-source content management framework written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License.

PrivateCore is a venture-backed startup that develops software to secure server data through server attestation and memory encryption. PrivateCore memory encryption technology protects against threats to servers such as cold boot attacks, hardware advanced persistent threats, rootkits/bootkits, computer hardware supply chain attacks and physical threats to servers from insiders. This week Facebook acquired PrivateCore for an undisclosed amount.

Something that is currently in the works involves the healthcare field, more specifically, the Electronic Medical Record, or EMR systems. Two companies that hold the market share are Cerner and Siemens, who are currently in talks concerning a buyout. Cerner is preparing the necessary documents to acquire Siemen's health IT business unit.
