Twitch Adopts Audio Muting Software

Twitch users are now going to need to be quite a bit more careful about the kind of music they play when they are making their gameplay videos. While the purchase of the video game streaming service by Google isn’t 100 percent official yet, the site’s latest move seems to be another indicator it will be official very, very soon. The company has recently started canning videos for unauthorized third-party audio and automatically mutes that audio.

The company announced the move as part of a partnership with Audible Magic. Audible Magic is a company that works with the music industry to, scan past and future [videos-on-demand] for music owned or controlled by its clients.  The really unfortunate part of this for Twitch users is that if a video is found that infringes on a copyright, the video’s audio will be muted for a 30-minute block.

This move shouldn’t affect those users who are doing live stream, as it only affects pre-recorded video on demand. Twitch added in its announcement that it won’t be scanning live broadcasts nor will it be taking content down. This approach is similar to the one that YouTube uses for its content, a sign that Twitch looks to be trying to come into more of a similar policy with content already owned by Google.

Twitch has been making a number of changes to its offering, recently shutting down Justin.Tv. The company is also making changes to how long people can save content on the website. There used to be a “save forever” option for paid users but that is no longer available. There is still a way to save some very select content through a 2-hour highlight reel. These reels can apparently exist on the website for as long as the user wants them there.

For the muting option, Twitch has offered up a handful of free-to-use music alternatives. The company also said there is a way to show that you have gotten the rights to the music you are playing and then the content will be unmuted.
