NetApp announced on Wednesday that Randall Runk would take over as executive vice president of field operations. Runk brings considerable managerial experience in the tech industry in his past roles as sales vice president for Hewlett-Packard (News - Alert), Infor and Oracle.

Sunnyvale, California based NetApp creates massive, enterprise-class storage systems for cloud service providers, big data applications and those seeking flash storage solutions. Its SAN and NAS scale-out configurations have tens of petabytes of capacity. The company has programs for resellers, partners and system integrators.

The company’s stock is currently traded on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol NTAP, and is trading in the $37 per share range, slightly above its 52-week low of $33.34. The stock recently received a “buy” rating from D.A. Davidson and several analysts predict the stock price will rise significantly within the next year, with some stating the company is a good takeover target.

NetApp has had to deal with some adversity the past year. In May, IBM (News - Alert) announced it would stop selling NetApp products to offer similar products to its customers. In March, NetApp announced that it would eliminate 600 jobs due to a drop in revenue from government customers. This came after 900 jobs had been cut in 2013.

Runk replaces Rob Salmon, who was promoted to president of go-to-market operations. According to his LinkedIn profile, Runk received a bachelor’s degree in foreign service and international politics at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to receive a master’s in public administration at the same university. In addition to his management positions mentioned earlier, he was a partner at Price Waterhouse Cooper from 1982 to 2002.

There are several challenges for Runk and NetApp to deal with. The company does offer products that are in demand as cloud and big data demand continue to grow, but the competition in that market is formidable.  There is a silver lining however, as according to D.A. Davidson’s Mark Kelleher, the flash storage and ONTAP clustering software should help the company bounce back.
