Intel Creates a Messaging App with an Avatar Feature

Now that messaging apps like Snapchat and Microsoft’s Skype proves that there is app for everyone by designing one targeting those who enjoy taking on other personas. Now it is possible to send videos as avatars through the new app Pocket Avatars, where you have the option of being a Lego character, blowfish, or even President Obama.

Pocket Avatars provides the opportunity to send a video message with your voice through a character of your choice. Intel has been working on this app for awhile to perfect the face-tracking system. This allows the app to monitor many behaviors like blinking, shaking your head and sticking your tongue out. After recording your video, another feature is the option to change the pitch of your voice before sending it. Because the videos are made in real-time, there is a limit of 15 seconds.

The videos made on the app are not limited to other users with the app; they can be sent through other sources like your email or social media sites. Pocket Avatars can be bought at the app store or on Google Play.  The app is free with select avatars, and for $0.99 each you can buy more avatars to choose from. Intel may add more characters later.

Intel expects the app to be a huge hit, bringing in a lot of money and (the company hopes) reaffirming that Intel is more than just a chip maker. This app proves that the company is taking on new directions, and changing the way the face-tracking system can be used.

Many companies partnered with Intel to get their brand characters as avatars. Over time, more companies may join in, as Pocket Avatars’ popularity grows, as a way to reach a broader audience.
