While World Cup fans are showing their support in a number of different ways, it seems as if retail therapy is one of the most popular these days. According to one industry analyst, online retail sales have grown by more than 17 percent over last year. It appears that the U.K. especially, is seeing some real interest in going shopping when it comes to burning off some nervous energy.

The electrical and gadgets sectors are also looking at a boom as the World Cup gets underway. The sector in the U.K. surged by as much as 19 percent in May, and it appears that the World Cup will bring as much as a 30 percent increase this month. The World Cup tends to be a period of time when electrical revenues in Great Britain skyrocket. During the 2010 and 2012 tournaments, the U.K. saw electrical usage go up by 26 percent and 35 percent respectively as soccer fans upgraded televisions in order to watch the games in as high tech a fashion as possible.

It appears that quite a few soccer fans want to make sure they are wearing their Sunday best when they are watching the game. Tina Spooner, chief information officer for industry analysts IMRG talked about the new spending reports in a recent statement saying, "Once again, the U.K. online retail market recorded solid annual growth last month, and excluding travel sales, the impressive 20 percent year-on-year performance is well ahead of our 2014 growth forecast.  Consumers are also spending more when shopping online with the average basket value in May reaching £88, the highest level recorded in two years.

Spooner continued that all sporting events tend to see spending levels among retailers go up. There’s usually a surge in television and home entertainment systems this time of year in the U.K.—especially this year with the World Cup in full swing.
