Yelp has long been one of the top sites on the web when it came to telling people what businesses they should frequent and what ones they should stay far, far away from. Recently, site announced the ability to add video to users’ reviews that will only make the site better. Now users will be able upload their videos the same way they have been able to upload photos in the past.

This kind of feature will likely be a big step ahead of the competition that exists from sites like Foursquare because users will be able to demonstrate why they like or dislike a particular place that much easier. Yelp’s (News - Alert) mobile product manager, Madhu Prabaker, recently talked to Business Insider and said the new feature is geared toward helping reviewers fully capture the atmosphere of a restaurant, store or other small business.

"It will be a reward for businesses that go to great lengths to achieve a certain ambiance, whether by having certain lighting or the music at just the right level," Prabaker told the website.

Yelp will allow the videos to be between 3 and 12 seconds long. That means people won’t be able to write video reviews but they will be able to show off the cleanliness or lack thereof. The feature will be implemented to “elite users” first in early June. Soon after these elite users get the feature, it will be available to all users. That means that if people can’t actually upload videos when June rolls around, they will still potentially start seeing them.

While Yelp is the first review site to offer up a feature like this, it shouldn’t be too long before other review websites decide they need to do something similar. The length of time it takes the other sites to follow Yelp’s footsteps will determine just how big a winner Yelp is.
