Comings & Goings: Ivy Ross To Helm Google Glass Division

As Google Glass begins to be a more mainstream device (as long as you’re willing to pay $1,500) the company is shuffling the leadership team. Among the significant HR changes going on in the Google (News - Alert) Glass division of the company is the departure of lead electrical engineer Adrian Wong. Wong is reportedly headed over to a competitor, Occulus. The second move is the hiring of Art.com’s Chief Marketing Officer Ivy Ross as the new head of the Google Glass division.

Ross is an interesting hire because she doesn’t exactly have a technological background. The Harvard-trained executive has held a number of high level marketing positions however. The hire seems to indicate that Google is officially ready to move away from development to attempting to generate mass appeal and mass use of Google Glass.

Ross has held marketing jobs at some of the top companies in the world, including Mattel, The Gap, Disney (News - Alert), Coach and Old Navy. The only real connection she could have with Google Glass would be a stint as the vice president of design and development for Outlook Eyewear at Bausch & Lomb. Ross will take over the Google Glass division from Babak Parviz.

It seems likely that Google has been looking to go away from the tech sector so the device can get a less geeky image. That move comes even as the firm continues to find new uses for the device, such as helping to treat various cancers.

It’s also possible the company doesn’t believe having one division head not being tied to the tech world can’t hurt. Google is still overseen by co-founder Sergey Brin (News - Alert) and Astro Teller. With those two helming the creative direction of the company, Ross can focus on selling the product to a larger audience. Ivy Ross seems well suited to that very specific task.
