Twitter Rolls Out Mute Feature For Those That Don't Want To Offend

Twitter (News - Alert) is rolling out its latest feature that lets users mute other users without having to un-follow or block them.  According to a blog post by the company made on Monday, the ability to mute a user will be made available on both iOS and Android devices, as well as Twitter's web interface.

Those who use third party Twitter clients probably already enjoy a muting feature, as quite a few third party apps come with advanced hushing methods which include the ability to mute by username, hashtag or keyword.

Why would Twitter provide the ability for a user to mute someone when they can just un-follow or block the offending person instead? There are several reasons that pop into mind, but the biggest reason to mute someone is to temporarily silence them.

When I heard of Twitter's announcement, I was anxious to put the mute function to the test. I don't hate the people that I follow, not by any means. It's just that there are some users in my timeline that tend to go off on long-winded rants about their personal life, or worse yet they participate in those tedious Twitter party chats, which read like one long commercial over the course of an hour.

In cases like these, the ability to mute a temporarily unpleasant user is welcomed. The alternative – un-following and then re-following them again - is not only a pain, but chances are the user will catch you in the act, either through an email notification or a service such as who.unfollowed.me.

One other reason to mute a user is follower count.  Unless you are a celebrity or other notable brand or personality, the best way to gain followers on Twitter is to follow people back.  The mute feature will come in handy for those looking to increase their follower count while keeping their timeline free of clutter.  This is especially true for new users, who typically will only gain followers if they follow back.

Twitter says the muted user will not receive a notification telling them you've muted them, and you can un-mute a user at any time.  To mute a person, just hit the 'More' item on Tweets and select mute. You can also mute people from their profiles by tapping the gear icon and choosing mute.

Twitter noted that the roll-out will be completed within a few weeks.
