Firefox 29 Gives Mobile and Desktop Browser A Big Refresh

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Mozilla’s (News - Alert) Firefox 29 goes quite a ways when it comes to emulating what Google Chrome is doing on the desktop. Chrome has long held the mantle of most popular browser for laptops and desktop computers. What Firefox has managed to do with its latest release is take the look and feel of Chrome and add in its own special recipe—the combination could give Mozilla a leg up in the browser wars.

When Mozilla released its newest update, it marked the first major revamp since its official relaunch in 2011. The changes that have been plugged into this browser are all geared towards trying to steal interest away from Chrome, Safari, and possibly kill off Internet Explorer once and for all. The launching of this new look and feel could also be a way for Mozilla to put some rather unfortunate goings on in its rearview mirror.

The company saw CTO Brendan Eich promoted to CEO and then resign just 11 days after the promotion. For weeks, the only reason anyone was talking about the Firefox browser was because of its former chief’s financial opposition to gay marriage. The release of Firefox 29 allows the company to get back into the headlines as a leading technological force.

Some of the key features with this update are a better sync across numerous computers with the Firefox account. There is also a graphics menu that can be customized to fit a user’s desires and rounded tabbed browsing that puts tabs users aren’t viewing in the background. This makes it that much easier to know exactly what tab you are using while allowing background tabs to remain in the background.

Perhaps most important for Mozilla is that the desktop browser got a revamp about the same time as its mobile browser for Android (News - Alert) got a lot of the same features. The company’s dedication to its mobile browser is another reason why it is staying in the running against Safari and Chrome in the escalating browser wars.
