Smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs and Smart TVs are in essence becoming the same by providing services which in the past were only available on one platform or the other. Today you can use a smartphone to watch your favorite TV show, make a phone call, video chat, and read an e-book or a magazine—you can also do it with any of the previously mentioned devices. Manufacturers and content providers are forming partnerships to give consumers access to everything these platforms are able to deliver. The latest such partnership is between Amazon Kindle and Samsung (News - Alert), by providing owners of the new Galaxy S5 a free e-book every month.

The new service called Kindle for Samsung is specifically designed as an e-book service for Samsung devices including the new S5 as well as other phones and tablets running on Android (News - Alert) 4.0 or higher. It includes the Samsung Book Deals, which allow users to select one free book every month from a selection of four titles.

By partnering with Amazon and its Kindle service, Samsung device owners can access one of the largest sources of best-selling books, newspapers and magazines in the world. The platform uses cloud technology to give users access to content anytime and anywhere no matter what device they're using. This means you can use your Samsung smartphone or tablet and continue on your Kindle reader without missing a beat or losing your page because the Whispersync keeps a virtual bookmark in your e-book.

The move by Samsung to form a partnership with a competitor might seem counterintuitive, but a closer look reveals the move will help it to increase its share of the tablet market. As of 2013 Apple (News - Alert) controlled 36 percent of all sales of the tablet market and Samsung accounted for around 19 percent. While Samsung and Android tablets are gaining ground globally, Apple and the iOS platform lost nearly 20 percent share.

The vast majority of people that don't own e-readers use their tablet to read e-books and access other reading material. This will eventually translate into sales for Samsung in the form of tablets, and since Amazon is all about scale it will mean more consumers accessing the different types of content the company is going to offer along with its books, magazines, newspapers and of course merchandise.
