Last July, Google (News - Alert) stepped into the TV streaming world with the release of Chromecast. Those who have bought into the little streaming device have been treated to a wide variety of videos that are able to be streamed directly from a mobile device or computer to the TV. Netflix, Redbox, iTunes, almost everything that can be thought of is there. While the actual quality of the device and its service may be top notch, there is one thing that has left people uninspired. The home screen on Chromecast.

Since its release, the Chromecast’s home screen has consisted of a boring background made of stock images. Alongside the photo background would be the time, and some basic network information. There is almost nothing else, and no built-in option to customize this screen. Users can download an app called MyCastScreen, which will allow them to put information cards up on their screen, and have some level of customization, but it must be streamed from a phone.

It is possible that Google has heard the gripes of its customers, and understands that they don’t want to have to cast a home screen onto their TVs through an app. A Reddit user who goes by the username of asjmcguire revealed a piece of code on April 9 that shows the possibility of Google adding some pizzazz to their home screen.

According to the code revealed on Reddit, Google may be planning on allowing users to post their own photos onto the Chromecast home screen. Also, Google looks to be planning on implementing a weather report system, using icons to provide users with updates on their local weather.

Chromecast is very much a work in progress, with updates and new features continuing to come out. The company recently released their SDK in order to allow third parties the ability to develop apps for the Chromecast, while quietly updating the device itself to allow live streams from Youtube. As the device is still being worked on, it can be known for having a few bugs and may not provide the highest quality of service compared to competitors Roku, Apple (News - Alert), and now Amazon. However, Google’s determination to improve Chromecast and the low price of $35 may make it a better choice anyway.
