With cameras integrated into virtually every mobile device people carry, people tend to find those devices filling up with photos. These photos are everywhere, on a phone, tablet, computer, or different memory cards. It can be overwhelming keeping track of all the photos, and finding a specific one can require a quest through all their devices. Cloud computing offers a quick fix for this, people can use services like Dropbox (News - Alert) from any of their devices to store and access photos over a cloud network.

Until now, Dropbox has mainly functioned as a simple cloud storage service, great for backing up data and sending it across devices. It’s even been useful for sharing files with others by making a file public. The quality of its service has made Dropbox a popular service for many, and riding upon this success it unveiled plans of going public.  Part of its plans to go public are further developing its service, and the release of a new photo sharing app, Carousel.

Carousel, announced and released on April 9, allows users to store and manage their photos over Dropbox’s cloud network. The app, available for both Android (News - Alert) and iOS, will take photos from camera rolls and organize them for users. It will have a wheel that users can use to quickly scroll through their photos in chronological order. The main feature of the app will be the ease with which users can share photos with phone and email contacts. While browsing their collection, users can drag photos to a bar at the top, and when ready they can send them out in just a few seconds.

Photo sharing has always been a popular way of connecting. Even before the digital age, it was the thing to do when a child brings home a date, embarrass them with photos. With everyone connecting online, photos have not lost their importance as a way to connect. Photo sharing is one service that draws users to an application, and Dropbox realized this is a key part of expanding their business. Carousel is sure to draw customers to their service, and strengthen the company in their move to go public.
