Although it’s most common to see people’s usage patterns broken down into age groups, it seems many research companies are interested in seeing gender’s role in technology and social media. This is the case, in fact, with a recent infographic put together by Ruby Media Corporation for Finances Online based on data from sources including the Pew (News - Alert) Research Center and Nielsen.

In particular, the infographic examines the ways men and women use social media and mobile. What it claims is that gender difference in these areas revolves around three aspects: our personal and professional relationships, the need for information and entertainment, and consumer behavior.

For example, in terms of relationships, men seem to be more likely to use social media for business and dating, while women tend to leverage it for staying in touch with friends and family, sharing, entertainment, and self help. But that’s just the tip of the infographic.

Delving deeper, it seems women generally have more interest in social media simply because they have more reasons to do so. For example, while only 39 percent of men said they use Facebook (News - Alert) to see photos and videos, 54 percent of women said the same. Women also expressed more interest in being able to share with many people at once, seeing entertaining or funny posts, learning about ways to help others, and receiving support from people in their network.

In terms of mobile usage, women also tend to be more active. For example, women tend to send texts, talk and access social media on their mobile devices more often than men. Women also play games on their smartphones 10 percent more often than men. On the flipside, men are more likely to watch video. The great equalizer in this area is e-mail, which both men and women use equally.

Check out the infographic below for full details.
