If buying a Smart TV or video game console seems a bit heavy of an investment just so you can watch streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu (News - Alert), several companies have been working on a simple solution for connecting the average HDTV to streaming services. Roku has been producing products that allow consumers to stream videos for some time, and released its Roku Streaming Stick early this month. This streaming stick is direct competition to Google’s (News - Alert) Chromecast, released almost a year ago in July 2013. Both devices are small “dongles” that can be filled with channels, and all users would have to do is plug the device into their HDMI ports and watch.

It seems like the Roku may be considered the better of the two products at this point, providing more stations to stream, but the Chromecast has been on the market for a much cheaper price. The Chromecast also has the ability to use smartphones as TV remotes, and can stream feeds directly from computers, meaning from a techie perspective the Chromecast has a lot more potential. However, for the British, the Chromecast was not on the market yet, leaving many in the U.K. waiting at the edge of their seats for the device.

The U.K. had a jolt of excitement when an Android (News - Alert)-based blog, Android Police, released a leaked screenshot on March 14, showing that the Chromecast would be released in the U.K. on March 19. Leaks are often unreliable, but to the joy of Google fans in the U.K., the leak turned out to be true, and the Chromecast’s U.K. release was announced.

The Chromecast, being sold in the U.S. for $35, will be sold to U.K. users for £30. The conversion may be dismaying for some, as this is over £14 more than the U.S. price. However, the Roku, being sold for more than twice the Chromecast’s price in the U.S., is being sold for £50 in the U.K. It also requires a pre-order, making it much harder and more expensive for those in the U.K. to get their hands on the device.
