Latest Facebook Beta for Windows Phone Enables Custom Notifications

It’s practically a tradition at this point for a large portion of Facebook’s (News - Alert) user base to get very upset when the social network changes the look of its website. This rarely seems to be the case with Facebook’s mobile apps, though, since the company’s renewed focus on mobile means it’s constantly updating its many standalone apps across the platforms it supports, rather than releasing one major set of changes all at once.

Indeed, even somewhat noteworthy updates to Facebook’s apps are pretty mild, with major features including something like allowing users to update their profile picture. That’s not to say major changes aren’t in store for Facebook mobile users. In fact, a good way to get a look at what’s to come for Facebook on your smartphone or tablet is to download the latest beta or alpha version of the app.

Obviously, if you’re using iOS or Android (News - Alert), you can access the bleeding edge of Facebook quite easily. But that doesn’t mean less popular platforms like Windows Phone don’t offer the same level of access. On the contrary, Facebook recently released a new update to its Windows Phone (News - Alert) beta channel, bringing the app to version 5.2.3.1.

Compatible with all devices running Windows Phone 7.5 and above, the latest beta version can be accessed via the Windows Phone store. The update doesn’t offer much in the way of new features, but it makes up for this by introducing a number of bug fixes, bringing it closer to its iOS and Android counterparts in terms of stability.

As for features, those running Facebook beta 5.2.3.1 are now able to change their Facebook notification tone to a custom sound. It may not seem like much, but considering the stable channel Facebook app for Windows Phone is relatively barebones, any new functionality is likely welcome.
