Yahoo Discontinues Access to Its Services Via Facebook, Google

Yahoo is unfriending Facebook, and yes, even Google (News - Alert) for that matter.

The company said that it would begin with restricting access to certain services, and eventually remove Facebook and Google login buttons from all of its products.

"We'd like to let you know about an upcoming change to Yahoo Fantasy's sign-in experience. In March, Yahoo Fantasy will begin asking everyone to sign in with a Yahoo username to access their teams, rosters, brackets and more. Eventually Facebook (News - Alert) and Google sign-in options will be removed,” said Yahoo’s website.

According to The Verge, it is unclear why the Internet giant has decided to restrict access to its services, however, under CEO Marissa Mayer, it could be part of her strategy to revive the company’s own services.

The switch will be "rolled out gradually," according to Reuters (News - Alert), who cited a Yahoo spokeswoman.

"Yahoo is continually working on improving the user experience," the company said in a statement, adding the process "will allow us to offer the best personalized experience to everyone," according to Reuters.

Yahoo is a pretty large Web company, and with Mayer’s takeover in 2012, it has spent a large part of that time trying to recapture its relevance, so the news isn’t so much of a surprise. In fact, it’s sound business logic. Logging into its services sans Yahoo login means Facebook and Google have the upper hand, thus get the lucrative user information.

The company has come a long way since Mayer took over in 2012. Mayer redesigned Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Finance, launched Yahoo News Digest and new magazines for food and tech. Yahoo's recent focus in acquiring mobile app-making companies demonstrates the company's motivation in the smartphone and tablet sectors.

By eliminating the Google and Facebook sign-ins, Mayer is reversing a strategy that company implemented under previous CEO, Carol Bartz (News - Alert).

Logins for Facebook and Google will be removed from all Yahoo services, the Yahoo spokeswoman confirmed, though a timeframe has not been announced.
