Facebook Ends Email Service to Focus More on Mobile Messaging

Facebook (News - Alert) couldn’t seem to get it together when it came to their email service. After having it for almost four years, the problems that occurred and the lack of use made the service not worth the time and effort the developers were putting into it. The company announced it would no longer be offering the email service to users.

Facebook, created by Mark Zuckerberg (News - Alert), started the online social media giant back in 2004 as a way for his college roommates to connect with other students at his alumnae school, Harvard University. Over time it expanded to all areas of schools within the Massachusetts area.

Since then the site exploded and allows anyone who is 13 years or older to sign up using an email address. After signing up, users are given a platform to post photos, talk about their day, connect with friends, check newsfeeds, see Twitter (News - Alert) feeds, and before today, gain a new email address.

The idea was to follow the success the company had with the messaging program it has installed. It’s similar to the older version of Aol Instant Messenger except now instead of having to leave Facebook you can see which of your friends are online and can have conversations while browsing and making updates to your profile.

The plan was to allow people to have an inbox where users could send and receive emails that would solely be from their friends. "It seems wrong that an email message from your best friend gets sandwiched between a bill and a bank statement," the company wrote in its announcement blog post for the feature.

However, since its introduction it has barely seen any upgrades and is basically a useless feature offered on the site. When people register, most register with a personal email address that they use on the site and when messaging they take advantage of the Facebook messaging service verses going to their @facebook.com email address.

Users of Facebook will start receiving messages letting them know of upcoming changes to the site that include the dissolution of the emailing service. In the email the company said, “We’re making this change because most people haven’t been using their Facebook email addresses, and we want to make it easier to view all your emails in once place. Plus, we can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone.”

No word on when it will be completely unavailable to all users.
