While Mozilla (News - Alert) is certainly paying attention to other services than its desktop browser, the company still knows it needs to compete in that area in order to survive. That’s why the company recently brought a major upgrade to its browser’s sync service. The system allows for users to sync bookmarks and browsing history from one computer using the browser to another. Before the upgrade the process to sync was a bit on the longish side. Now a simple user name and password will get the job done.

The earlier process made users type in synchronization keys into each machine. Mozilla didn’t keep a database of those keys so if a user happened to forget one they had to go through a lengthy process in order to start the sync system up again. The upgrade to the syncing service means that it now has a more traditional build. It also means that the service could become a little more attractive to web browser users who have turned to Chrome because of its ease of use when it comes to sync.

Mozilla has been hard at work trying to expand to the smartphone market but the company needs to know where its bread is buttered. The browser is currently ranked third in popularity, behind Google’s (News - Alert) Chrome and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Despite it trailing behind in the browser wars, there are indications that it is picking up steam when it comes to popularity. Making it that much easier for people to sync their information from their computer at home to the one that they use on the job is a step in the right direction.

Mozilla had the right idea with its more difficult synchronization service, because that particular status made it anonymous and harder to access for hackers. The upgrade and the addition of a simple user name and password might make users a little more of a target for hackers, but it will also likely bring more users in.
