Facebook Celebrates 10 Years on the Web

Facebook (News - Alert) turned 10 years old last week and it gave all of its users the present. The social networking site has come under fire the last few years for features that seemed to serve the website more than its clients but the Look Back video feature is one that can appeal to any user, young or old. The video is one that takes a bunch of different photos that have been uploaded and posts that have been made and puts them together with some music geared towards invoking watershed moments.

Social media’s first use wass for people to share their thoughts, feelings and remembrances with the rest of the world. Facebook has managed to put something together that allows those users to look back on everything they have posted on the site since they joined. The movie is done automatically, pulling the postings with the most “likes,” but it can also be edited, should there be something that is left out of the video that users desperately want to make it in.

The 10-year anniversary of the site’s launch is more than just a reason to put together some neat little one-minute videos. The anniversary means that the social site has truly become a force of nature when it comes to the Web. We've watched as Facebook has grown from a place where friends and family members can keep in touch, to becoming a site that is important to work-related networking, as well. The service was once just a small startup that allowed students to connect with one another. Now mobile advertising revenue and an expansion into areas that were never envisioned when it was first launched have made it a juggernaut.

The good news for fans of the site is that despite claims that it would soon go the way of MySpace (News - Alert) it appears to only be getting stronger. The service is launching new little features seemingly every day. That allows it to survive when its social media predecessors have all failed. While it once seemed highly unlikely, a 20-year anniversary for Facebook seems almost inevitable these days.
