It still seems odd to point out that the Pope has joined the 21st century in a big way, by becoming quite the presence on the Internet. Considering the papacy has even been the victim of Malware, it seems as if the leader of the Catholic Church is spending as much time on the web as anyone else. Social media has especially taken notice of Pope Francis and his activity there. This is actually how a group of school children from St. Raymond’s Elementary in New York got the word out that they wanted to Skype (News - Alert) with the Pontiff.
The group has been reaching out to anyone they can think of, from Oprah to Ellen and they’ve been using whatever means they can think of, including Twitter (News - Alert). The students put together a Pope Francis appreciation video that they hope will get Francis’ attention. It opens with the message, “We made this video to show you how our class honors and admires you.”
The rest of the video shows various quotes from the Catholic Church’s leader on placards that are held by the kids in the school. His messages about love and acceptance and helping others was highlighted by the group as the reason they desperately want to meet him. The video implores the Pope to start up a Skype chat with them, or stop by the school if he’s “ever in New York and has a spare minute.”
It should be pointed out that Skyping has become that much easier, whether it is being done on personal computer or a mobile device. Even the newest iOS iPad Air and iPhone (News - Alert) 5S are now supporting two-way HD video calls. That means there’s even less of a reason for the Pope to not contact these children, who have worked awfully hard to get his attention.
