With social network platforms constantly evolving and updating, do you ever wonder what’s next in store? Social networks strive to make connecting to those around you simpler, which is exactly what Twitter (News - Alert) has recently worked on.
Twitter’s latest experiment is testing a feature that can show users tweets of those closest to them. So if you ever seem to find yourself wondering what your neighbor is up to, you can check out Twitter’s Nearby Timeline (News - Alert) that has been added to the company’s mobile app for select users.
According to the Wall Street Journal, in order for users to see these Nearby tweets they must have their location enabled. This enabled feature has been working since 2010 but happens to be turned off by default.
The Nearby screen will be split into two parts involving a map to highlight a user’s location and a screen designated to show a timeline of tweets from those nearby. To make things even more interesting, Nearby tweets will be shown from just about anyone, even if a user doesn’t follow that certain person.
This experiment is all in part of Twitter’s plan to make it easier for user’s to follow what they care about. According to the VP of Engineering at Twitter, Alex Roetter, experimentation is what the company is all about. He stated in a blog, “It’s rare for a day to go by when we’re not releasing at least one experiment.”
“We also experiment with features that may never be released to everyone who uses Twitter. Those experiments are perhaps even more valuable because they help us decide what not to do –– which is important as we work to keep Twitter simple while improving the user experience,” said Roetter.
A Twitter spokeswoman similarly stated that Twitter experiments frequently but declined to comment on this new feature. If the company decides to use this Nearby feature, it will be similar to Foursquare (News - Alert), which shows users recommendations from their friends of nearby areas.
