Right now, most people's minds are occupied by thoughts of turkey and stuffing, time with family and the upcoming rush to Christmas. But in the gadget community, a new thought is starting to enter the fold, and that's the thought of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES (News - Alert)) event set to take place January 7 – 10 in Las Vegas, Nevada. DoMark International is on that particular wavelength, getting its new Imagic Smartlink product ready for the big show. But before it arrived, DoMark started answering some questions about just what the Smartlink is...and isn't.

DoMark put out the word that its new Imagic Smartlink system isn't designed to be a competitor to the major new console releases like the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One, but rather a sort of complement to these systems. The Smartlink reportedly offers a way for gamers to play favorite games via a smartphone or tablet thanks to a plug-in controller that attaches to said devices. The system can then allow gamers to play these games on larger screens should one become available and see the game being played in real time.

How does the Smartlink accomplish such feats? Reports from the company indicate that the system allows for streaming and reception of said streaming at a 60ghz rate, which reportedly allows for smooth transmission that beats many current Wi-Fi transmitters. It also, at last report, comes with a library of games available for download that can then be easily moved from mobile device to a larger-scale screen.

DoMark's CEO, Andrew Ritchie, offered a bit of comment on the release, saying “The hardened gamer will be able to play anywhere, and we don't see ourselves competing with Microsoft (News - Alert) Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4, we feel we are giving the customer an extra choice anywhere they want to play their video games. If you are a serious gaming enthusiast, we feel they will want this product.” Further reports suggest that DoMark is putting its collective money where its mouth is, as it's increased investment in its Imagic holdings back in September ahead of this release. There are, at last report, other Smartlink products—including a printer—but the controller is a development largely for the gaming market.

There's certainly some potential here. I'm sure there have been some mobile gamers who took a game on the road—the doctor's office, waiting for a pick-up dinner to be made, where ever—and discovered that said game was too far in to stop playing. But with this device, those same gamers will be able to route the game to a larger screen and enjoy a completely different kind of mobile action. Sure, some may wonder what point there is to putting mobile games on a big screen, but it's a strategy that seems to be doing reasonably well for platforms like the Ouya.

Still, it's one more gaming option in a market that's going to be flush with same, especially going into the holiday shopping season. The price is sadly not yet announced, however, and it's entirely possible based on current reports that the Imagic Smartlink controller may not hit stores in time for Christmas, as availability is said to be “late Q4 or early 2014.” Still, it may be a good item to drop a gift card or two on, and it's likely to make a splash when the CES event arrives.
