While behemoth tech companies like Samsung (News - Alert) and Sony work diligently in their impossibly high, fancy towers to craft the perfect smartwatch — their resources endless, their determination also endless — one fearless young man has been quietly working in the shadows. He too, is dedicated to creating the ultimate smartwatch, one that people will actually want. His name is Simon Tian, and he's from Canada.

At just 19 years old, Tian is heading his own startup called Neptune Computer, Inc., an effort positioned around seeing Tian's smartwatch dreams materialize. The startup has turned to Kickstarter to get itself up and running. Tian and his vision were generously embraced; just over 24 hours after launching his campaign, Tian met his target of $100,000. Tian had raised nearly $200,000 with still 30 days left in his fundraising endeavor.

Tian came up with the idea for his smartwatch — coined the Neptune Pine —  last year and went to China to check out factories to see what was in store for him, Manufacturing Net reports. Tian was taken aback by just how much impact a lone startup could make in a world seemingly dominated by corporate bigwigs.

"What I learned is that in 2013 it's actually possible for small startup companies like us to develop products as competitive as what the big guys are coming up with, because material costs have been going down for years and they've been made accessible — all the different chips and components — not to only large orders but to small orders as well," said Tian.

The Neptune Pine sports a 2.4-inch screen — abnormally large for a watch and potentially a deterrent from wearing it, but a necessary one to Tian who believes “a paradigm shift is going to be required in the future." It has its own SIM card so it's not dependent on a smartphone for a wireless connection, though it can connect to WiFi (News - Alert).

Tian has plans to make at least 2,500 units of his Neptune Pine smart watch by January. The debut model will contain 16 gigabytes of storage and retail for $335, with the option of double the storage for an extra $60.
