Thanks in part to investment capital from the Biebs, RockLive has just released their new selfie-sharing "Shots of Me" app. Although you won't find it in the App Store yet, the app, which is free for iOS, is available by pointing your browser to "shots.me."
If you're like me, then you're oblivious to teen pop culture. I can't name the title of a single Justin Bieber song. However, I do, like most people, take the occasional self-portrait. So I downloaded Shots of Me onto my iPhone (News - Alert) and gave it a try.
Shots of Me is a social network for selfies. You start by creating a username and password. After you login, you shoot your first selfie. I grabbed the friendlier of my two cats, Reilly, took the following selfie and tapped "Share":
The app posted my cat-enhanced selfie and then brought up a dialog box asking if I wanted to take another selfie. No amount of angry touchscreen tapping could eliminate the box, so I had to restart my iPhone. When I opened Shots of Me again and took yet another selfie (I didn't like that one, so I'm not going to let you see it), I was able to look at my feed.
You can't post photo comments, but you can direct message people just like you can on Twitter (News - Alert). And I already have a follower. Isn't that sweet?
You can't take a selfie using your iPhone and then upload it to Shots of Me, so you can only take photos within the app using your front-facing camera. You also can't peruse the Shots of Me network on the Web yet. Additionally, the icons are positioned on top of your username, which makes the layout a little awkward.
What's my verdict? It's yet another photo-sharing app and yet another social network launching in a crowded marketplace. However, since Justin Bieber gave around $1 million to RockLive and is promoting the app to his Twitter and Facebook (News - Alert) legions, Shots of Me may soon become, as TechCrunch dubbed it, "The Instagram for Selfies."
