Adios Bieber - Katy Perry is Social Media's #1 Crush

There's something about Katy. The mega star who has been one of pop music's reigning queens for the last several years, just whirred past Justin Bieber in social media popularity. Perry has 46.55 million followers on Twitter (News - Alert) and 59.27 million likes on Facebook. Former social media ruler, and arguably the bigger diva of the two, Bieber has a mere 46.52 million followers on Twitter and 57.28 million likes on Facebook (News - Alert).

The 29 year-old starlet, who (tragically) is in a romantic relationship with hulking Lothario John Mayer, told USA Today that she feels she has learned "how to tame that social media dragon." She added that she has “horrible typos” and uses “’there’ or ‘your’ wrong, grammatically.”

Perry shared some of her social media tips with fans, advising, "When you decide to have a glass of wine, put the phone down. Don't drink and tweet. Don't be self-indulgent. Don't use it just to promote yourself. That's boring."

We think Bieber would beg to differ, but we no long care what he thinks, right? He's only second in command, now.

Buzz surrounding "Prism," the new, highly anticipated album by Perry, is one of the reasons for her ascent to the highest peaks of popularity, but there are other factors to be taken into account as well. Unlike Justin Bieber, whose antics portray him as a spoiled brat with absolutely no concept of modesty, Katy Perry is likable, so much so that it can actually be a challenge to dislike her. This isn't to say she doesn't self-promote or bask in the spotlight, but she does so in a way that is perfectly non-offensive. She represents the ultimate good girl that somehow doesn't make you sick to your stomach because there's just a little bit of bad there. Also, she looks great with blue hair.

As much as Katy Perry's social media domination says about her persona, it says even more about social media itself. In 2009, Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears, and CNN were all in a deadlock to become Twitter's most followed source. Kutcher won that race, with one million followers.
