Few major apps go very long without some kind of update being applied. There are updates and further augmentations that happen to give apps more functionality and a better overall value for users, lest said users go looking at the many competing apps in the field for just about any given purpose. Two apps in particular, Skype (News - Alert) for iPad and CBS Sports, recently got some augmentation, adding new features and new value to the apps.

First, the Skype for iPad app rolled out version 4.10, which allows users of fourth-generation iPads to make HD-quality video calls, as well as a set of general improvements geared toward bolstering stability and further improving call quality. A further set of fixes was also brought in with the most noticeable being a redesigned country code picker on the dial pad, making it easier to make international calls. The new version of Skype for iPad is available as a free download, and is compatible with an iPad running at least iOS version 5.0.

CBS Interactive, meanwhile, wheeled out the next big update with CBS Sports version 6.0. The new version of CBS Sports brings in full compatibility with the iPad, as well as the ability to watch live video from devices. There's plenty of live video to be had here too, as from January through April the app offers NCAA basketball, before switching over to the PGA Tour from May to August, then moving over to SEC (News - Alert) football games for the rest of the year. There's also plenty to be had in the way of highlights from other games, analysis for games, and original videos besides. The app itself is a free download, and is compatible with the iOS hardware lineup (iPhone (News - Alert), iPad and breeds of iPod) running at least iOS version 6.0.

Both of these augmentations are likely to prove welcome to current users, and those who aren't already users may well get in on these thanks to the extra functions. Streaming content in the field of sports has been one of the biggest problems for many who would be cable cutters, and augmenting Skype, already a useful program, is likely to give it some extra punch in the face of a lot of competition like the growing market that is Web-based real time communications (WebRTC).

Adding extra value to apps—especially apps that are likely to have quite a bit of competition from others in the field—is in general a smart idea, and the kind of thing that's commonly well-received by the user base. Both Skype and CBS are likely to see some increased traffic as a result of these changes, and have hopefully made modifications to systems accordingly to accommodate the extra traffic.
