Apple Agrees to Help Investigate iPhone Electrocution

While there have been plenty of complaints about the iPhone (News - Alert) 5 and various problems that have erupted from the device, there have been very few claims that using the smartphone is actually deadly. That rather odd claim has apparently been made by the family of a Chinese woman who was supposedly electrocuted when she went to answer an iPhone 5 that was charging. The 23-year-old Ma Ailun was electrocuted severely enough to kill her, according to those close to the woman.

While most complaints about the iPhone 5 have centered around its new Apple (News - Alert) Maps program, if this story turns out to be confirmed, it marks a very real concern for at least some iPhone users. Chinese police is claiming that the woman who was electrocuted when she answered the charging iPhone and the story took off when her sister wrote about the issue. While there actually was a recall of Apple 3G chargers back in 2008, there haven’t been any widespread charges of the iPhone 5 having this kind of a problem.

Unfortunately for Apple, this is not the first time that a story has begun circulating in China that cast the company in a negative light. A story that engendered negative publicity about the company’s warranty policy prompted Apple to issue a formal apology. Since that April apology, the company has paid special attention to any kind of negative publicity from China. Someone actually dying from something as simple as a charging phone would certainly count as negative and Apple could have bigger problems on its hands if other cases surface. The specifics of this particular case are not well known, so there is no information as to whether or not Ailun was doing something that wasn’t prescribed when she was electrocuted. Apple has pledged that it will cooperate fully in the investigation.
